Trudy & Jacqueline Holzbaur (Mother/Daughter)
All our lives working out and being in shape has been a top priority for us. From one gym membership to the next, in January 2013 we decided to try just one more – our local YMCA. Coming from either class or work to the gym, however, we never seemed to find time to workout together minus the occasional Saturday or Sunday morning. January, February, March…the months came and went, seeing little results in achieving the bodies we were constantly working so hard for. Then a friend mentioned something to us, something we’ve never heard of in our lives, something called “Tough Mudder”. And with those words, that is where our journey started.
A couple weeks later, we officially decided that we were going to participate in the annual Tri-State Tough Mudder together which was scheduled for October 13, 2013. With only six months to prepare, I (Trudy) suggested to Jacqueline that we should check out CrossFit. Jacqueline was apprehensive, as she had experienced a CrossFit class when she was a student at Rowan University and hated it, always saying “I will never do CrossFit again. Working out in a class/group-like atmosphere is just not for me”. But after a short debate, Jacqueline gave in and decided that she would give it another try.
In April 2013 we stopped into the “BOX” one evening and were greeted by Coach Dave. He talked to us a little bit about the philosophy of CrossFit and after our evaluations, we joined. The members welcomed us with encouragement and support, and the coaches inspired us to focus on our technique and agility. Honestly, we can’t say enough about how different it is to workout at CFH. Let’s face it, CrossFit can be a bit overwhelming in the beginning, but not at CFH. It’s not a competition…it’s about you. Setting, reaching, and conquering your personal goals with the help and motivation of the community around you.
In addition to the intense workouts, CFH introduced us to the nutritional component many of the members follow. Jacqueline had mentioned Paleo to me back in January but I had my doubts, saying “it doesn’t seem very healthy” but we decided to commit and boy are we glad we did! To date, we have lost a combined total of 35+ lbs and couldn’t feel any better. I have frequent conversations with Coach Dave about my diet and exercise and he is always able to offer suggestions on how to tweak things in order to continue on the path to success. “Thank you so much Dave for all the time and effort you put into making this ‘community’ a step above the rest. I would not be where I am today without the support and encouragement of you and your entire team of coaches. You guys are the BEST!” – Trudy.
In fall 2013, Jacqueline left for NYU to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. Although she is no longer a regular at the gym, she still remains a part of this community by completing the CFH workouts every day in the gym at school. “I would like to give A BIG shout out to Coach Joey Dill for all your time and advice on how to modify the workouts in my limited school gym and provide me nutritional guidelines to help reach my goals. I couldn’t do it without you! You and the CFH team of coaches are truly an inspiration!” – Jacqueline.
Besides the amazing community we are now honored to be a part of, joining CFH is the reason my daughter and I now have the relationship we do. Although Jacqueline is at NYU and I am home, we don’t let the distance defeat us. We encourage each other everyday and are never at a loss when it comes to conversation topics. From comparing our successes in the WOD’s to pushing each other to work harder, joining CFH has not only given us the best bodies we could ever want, but also given us the best friend we could ever need.
